Blogging Burnout is Real: Follow These Four Blogging Tips to Avoid Burnout
I have have written and publishing thousands of blog posts, both on our digital marketing agency’s blog and across a number of other sites. That’s a lot of content, but plenty of blogs tower over these numbers in terms of the number of posts.
Getting to one thousand was very challenging and often very stressful Heck, getting to 100 was tiring.. Going beyond that is an even bigger lift.
Blogging can be super rewarding and can even become a full-time job. It can also lead to burnout and a significant collapse if you aren’t careful.
We are very busy as bloggers, and it’s often hard to find the time to make it all happen.
I’ve run into the blogging wall many times myself. I always get back up and keep going, but there have been times I’ve thought about throwing in the towel.
I’ve been down in the dirt, but I’ve dusted myself off each time and gotten back up.
Blogging isn’t easy, but success as a blogger is highly possible. If you are feeling burned out and thinking about giving up, never fear (or fear, but embrace that fear as our friend Ryan Biddulph says and turn it into something positive).
If you feel like you’re about to run into that wall and you’re facing burnout, don’t worry. I’ve got your back.
Here are a few effective tactics I use to punch burnout in the face and keep on rolling toward blogging success.
Make Blogger Friends
Building an audience for your blog is challenging. Many bloggers start off with a limited budget for marketing. So, with a limited budget for marketing, how do you grow your blog?
Answer: Make some friends.
By working together with other likeminded blogging pros, you can help one another grow much more quickly than you would if you set out to do so alone.
Most other bloggers are either in your shoes or they were in your shoes in the not-so-distant past. Because they understand what you’re going through, every blogger is a potential ally.
Reach out to some bloggers in your niche and let them know that you’re there to help.
Quick Tip: Never reach out to other bloggers with a cold ask for a backlink, social share, or other type of help.
Before you even think about asking for help from another blogger, you need to offer them help first.
Follow these steps to succeed at building powerful, mutually beneficial relationships with other bloggers.
- Share their content on social media and mention them by name
- Cite their posts in the content you create and add backlinks to their content (for free)
- Make introductions to people you think might be able to help them
- Ask directly if they need help with anything
Show the value you add, and then let other bloggers know that you are doing your best to help them grow. Don’t get frustrated if they don’t immediately return the favor.
Just keeping doing what you do out of the kindness of your heart. It will not go unnoticed. And when it gets noticed, those pro bloggers will reach down a hand and help lift you up.
Allow Guest Posts On Your Blog
Producing enough content to keep readers coming back and to grab the attention of the search engines can feel impossible at times. That’s why we opened the doors to allow guest bloggers to contribute to the Gaenzle Marketing blog.
By allowing guest bloggers, you can double, triple (or more) the amount of content you produce, but without the burnout that can creep up.
Just make sure you’re picky when you accept guest posts.
To ensure the quality of the content your guest bloggers submit, make sure they…
- …have strong expertise in your niche.
- …are solid writers, so you don’t have to do a lot of editing.
- …fully understand your guidelines.
- …are respected in your field and not controversial.
Start by creating a “Write For Us” page on your website that lays out exactly what you expect from your contributors, the types of content you will accept, and lays out exactly what they need to do to submit content and get accepted.
I run a marketing agency and a blog, plus I am focused on building my personal brand and helping busy professional build their personal brand. All that is done in addition to the most important thing I have going on…my family.
So, you can imagine how challenging I found it to create one article per day (let alone two) for the blog. When I opened the door to guest bloggers, it became super easy (or “easy-ish, anyway).
There was a lot of irrelevant or bad content submitted at first. But I put a system in place to reduce the waste and increase the amount of quality content that came through.
We turn down about 70% of the guest post pitches that come through. As such, with a little editing and due diligence, we can now publish two high-quality blog posts on the blog every day.
If you allow guest bloggers (good ones) into the fold on your blog, you’ll be able to ramp up content production while keeping the effort level down to reduce the potential for burnout.
Monetize and Hire Help
There are many ways you can monetize your blog.
- Sponsored posts
- Advertising
- Influencer marketing
- Selling courses
- Selling digital products
- eBooks
- Affiliate marketing
- Offering services
These are just a few ways you can monetize your blog. As you begin to generate revenue from your blog, you can then funnel that back into your blog’s growth by hiring some help.
Think about the smaller tasks you don’t have time to handle. Publishing content, editing, posting on social media, responding to emails, the list goes on.
Once you have your list in place, delegate these tasks. Hire a virtual assistant or intern to join forces with you.
Stop Trying to Do Everything
Many bloggers (I was one of them), make the mistake of trying to do everything. At first, that may be ok. But, as your blog grows, the scope of work involved in making your blog grow expands significantly.
As your blog grows, so do the day-to-day tasks involved in making it run. Bring in someone, maybe just for 10-20 hours per month at first, to handle some of the tasks on your list and free you up to focus on the bigger picture.
Hiring someone can allow you to focus on the things that help drive more revenue. As your blogging revenue increases, you can hire more people.
Just be careful not to overhire. Hire only for the hours and tasks you really need. Ramp up slowly, and watch your blog grow along with your team.
Train Your Blogging Brain
Blogging can be stressful. Too much stress leads to burnout.
Not all stress, however, is real. A lot of the stress we feel in our lives, we create.
We worry about things that aren’t really a problem. We stress about that next big thing, or we stress about every little thing on our plate all at once.
Train your brain to think positively and to reframe things in your mind. Learn to focus on one thing at a time and not create a bunch of noise in the background thinking about everything you’ve got going on.
When you face a blogging challenge, twist it around and view it as an opportunity.
Breaks and Re-energizing
If you find yourself burning out, take a break. Take a deep breath and unwind. Get outside in nature and take a brisk walk or hike through the woods.
Blogging should be fun. If it gets too stressful, you need to change your approach.
Blogging is a marathon, not a sprint. If you think you’re going to go from zero to blogging success overnight, you’re mistaken.
Train your brain to understand that you need to be in it for the long-run. Learn to love what you do and embrace the bumps along the way.
Rely on your blogging friends to keep you going when things get tough. Stay positive, and stay focused. If you take steps to train your brain to stay positive and reframe the way you think, you’ll be well on the road to blogging success.
Final Thoughts on Avoiding Blogging Burnout
Blogging is a long-term thing. It’s not something that you can just quit your day job and start making six figures in a month.
Most of the top bloggers out there took years to get where they are today. They were patient, they had a passion for blogging and their niche, and they surrounded themselves with other amazing bloggers who helped give each other fuel to keep going along their individual blogging paths.
Producing enough content can be quite tricky. That’s where guest blogging comes in. Let others do some of the work for you while at the same time giving them an opportunity to grab a backlink and get their brand and expertise out there in a new forum.
Stay the blogging course. If you truly love what you do, you will succeed, no matter how long it takes.
Bio
Anthony is the CEO and Founder of Gaenzle Marketing. He is a two-time published author and digital marketing influencer. He has helped brands, both large and small, grow and thrive across multiple industries through strategic marketing campaigns and leveraging a powerful network of influencers.
All are great tips and thumbs up for the shout out Anthony. Eventually, you need to realize that you can’t do it all solo or else you will not only burn out but hit a sticking point as far as leveraging and scaling. Hiring skilled, credible human beings is one step and one other step involves letting go all the activities that aren’t really working for you or your readers and which you’ve outgrown. This frees you to be even more helpful and to accelerate your success and freedom too.
Ryan
Thank you, Ryan. It’s easy to add shout-outs to you since you’ve got so much great advice out there! You’re 100% right. We don’t have to go it alone. That’s a recipe for disaster. We hire smart people and then let them do their thing. We aren’t experts in everything, nor should we be.
