How to Detect AI Blog Spammers

Have you noticed any of the AI blog spammers commenting on your WordPress blog at all?

These spammers are a lot different than the spammers we bloggers are all used to. They trick you into thinking they’re a real human. But in reality, it’s all about spreading their spam link, and you might overlook it because of the clever tactics they’re using.

In this short guide, I’ll show you how to identify and combat AI blog spammers so that you can continue protecting your blog.

Identifying AI Blog Spammers

The best way to identify AI blog spammers is to be suspicious of any comment that gets posted on your WordPress blog.

You should make sure that you have your settings so that you can approve all new comments. You can allow the comments of people that you’ve already approved in the past, but any new ones should go through a comment review first. This will be one of your greatest lines of defense in keeping spam comments off your blog.

There are three indicators to look for in terms of these AI blog spammers.

The first indicator is their name as it will often be the name or associated name of the link they also include. Then you want to look at their link in a preview but never open it up because it could potentially harm your computer. Lastly, review their content to see if it looks spammy or suspicious.

I want to put some extra emphasis on their comment content because it’s important.

Their comment is going to look realistic. These AI blog spammers are “scraping” keywords from your blog post to make it look like they’re actual readers. If you see this and don’t take note of their name and link, it’s going to be easy to get fooled by them.

How to Prevent AI Blog Spammers Altogether

Your main goal should be to prevent AI blog spammers and any other spammer from ever even being able to comment on your WordPress blog.

Luckily, there are many different methods and tools (FREE) to help you do this. Let’s take a look at some of these great methods and tools now:

  1. Turn on Comment Moderation by going to your WordPress Settings and then Discussion. Look for the “Before a comment appears” setting and adjust the other settings as needed.
  2. Add a CAPTCHA to your blog comment form. Many plugins exist for this. Find a compatible one using reCAPTCHA or hCAPTCHA for the best results.
  3. Activate Akismet on your blog. This will help you block a lot of comment spam behind the scenes so that you don’t have to deal with it constantly.
  4. Install a firewall, such as Cloudflare, on your WordPress blog. This will help you block spammers and malicious users who could harm your blog.
  5. Install a plugin that integrates Project Honeypot into your blog. This is a spam reporting and prevention service that compiles spammers in a database to help others.
  6. You could remove the website field from your comment form altogether. This might stop other bloggers from commenting, but if you have a specific niche, it probably won’t matter to you anyway.
  7. Turn off comments on older posts. You can do this in your WordPress settings and choose the time you want to turn off comments when they reach a certain age.
  8. You could turn off comments altogether if you don’t really have a goal to engage with your readers. If you’re not reading comments, then why have then enabled for spammers to potentially get through?

The options above will help you significantly reduce the number of spammers who hit your blog comments. While I’m not a fan of disabling comments even after a certain date, I recommend using multiple options above to strengthen your anti-spam defense. Spam is a problem that we shouldn’t need to waste that much time dealing with.

Alternatives to Blog Comments

If you feel that blog comments are getting too spammy, especially with these new AI blog spammers, you could always consider alternative ways to engage with your readers.

You could note that readers of your blog post should head over to your preferred social media page to comment on your blog or email list. You could also refer your readers to join your online community or discussion forum to engage with you there instead. You could also refer them to send you a message through a chat messenger that you can have setup to automatically communicate with them based on information you’ve inputted through the bot.

While blog comments are still a great way to engage with your audience, they’re not as updated and modern as the rest of WordPress seems to be.

Final Thoughts About AI Blog Spammers

I think this is only the beginning of what we’re seeing with these AI blog spammers.

Artificial intelligence is significantly and quickly developing by the day. While that can be great for many different applications of AI, it can also be even more of a hassle when combatting spammers on the internet. It’s important to stay on top of AI trends and updates so that you know what to expect and how to deal with it.

I’d love to hear from you. Have you got any of these AI blog spammer comments on your blog yet? Did you notice them right away, or did you let any get past you without realizing it?
